For Easter
For Easter—a Holy Week reprise.
Consider how an uncommonly bright star marked the birthplace of Jesus. Consider how simple water became the best tasting wine at Jesus’ command when he attended a wedding in Cana. Consider how the earth trembled when Jesus died. Now, go back a few days before that dark night, and consider the stones which Jesus referenced as he made his final entrance into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, on the day we now remember each year on Palm Sunday.
Listen to Jesus as he responds to the Pharisees in Luke 19:40, when they ask him to rebuke his disciples for their fervor. Jesus says, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
That powerful scripture verse from Luke is the inspiration for my Holy Week story today. Creation will serve as witness to the experience of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection as the events unfolded some nearly 2,000 years ago. It is true that creation knew Jesus. Creation continues to point the way to him, even when we dare not open our hearts to see.
