Simeon’s Gift

Feast of the Presentation of Jesus ~ Luke 2:22-40

I was considering the gospel reading from the Feast of the Presentation in preparation for teaching our children at mass on Sunday. I pondered the opening dramatic scene from The Lion King in which Rafiki lifts up the newborn lion king, Simba, to present him to the Animal Kingdom. All of the kingdom charged in haste and in great anticipation to greet the lion cub who was born to lead them one day.

Well, a holy and prophetic man, Simeon, over 2000 years ago, was waiting for our Savior with all the eagerness and anticipation demonstrated in that iconic opening movie sequence. Only, this time, Simeon would be holding the newborn King as was promised to him by the Holy Spirit. Joseph and Mary would look on in amazement at the understanding and truth that Simeon revealed in the temple that day. And yet, so many of his friends did not recognize the tiny babe.

God continues to insert himself into our lives in an everlasting “Presentation.” Our God, who made himself like us, brought us hope for eternal life with him. He longs for us to recognize the One whom Simeon waited for, and whose presence he proclaimed with joy on that day long ago in the temple.

There is more to share with children on the Presentation in the Activities tab: A coloring page, a poetic song inspired by our gospel reading from Luke, and hand motions for children to use to re-tell the story. Allow your children to imitate these gestures as they join you in repeating lines, as you recite or sing the words to “A Joyful Presentation.”
